Creative Assignments in Digital Learning

Creative Assignments in Digital Learning

In today’s classrooms, successful teachers speak two languages:

  • The first is pedagogy, psychology, and human connection.
  • The second is technology and artificial intelligence.

This page is your first guide to mastering the second language—not to replace the first, but to enrich it.

Why Traditional Assignments No Longer Work

When a student uses AI to complete a task, they’re not cheating—they’re speaking a language our old assignments don’t understand. Our mission is to design tasks that make sense in this new world, transforming students from information repeaters into knowledge creators.

Three Smart Assignment Models

  • Scenario-Based Tasks: Place the student in a role and situation to solve a real-world problem.
Example: Instead of listing causes of the Industrial Revolution, ask them to write a speech as a British MP in 1850 defending workers’ rights.
  • Comparative Analysis Tasks: Compare two contrasting perspectives using AI-generated sources.
Example: Contrast the views of an environmental activist and a development engineer on dam construction, then form a reasoned opinion.
  • Creation & Critique Tasks: Use AI-generated content as a starting point, then improve and critique it.
Example: Rewrite an AI-generated paragraph about autumn and explain why your version is stronger.

Your Prompt Toolkit

Use these three prompt templates to generate creative assignment ideas with AI. Just replace the [brackets] with your subject and topic.

  • Scenario-Based Prompt
  • Comparative Analysis Prompt
  • Creation & Critique Prompt

Each template helps you build a rich “assignment basket” tailored to your course.

Your Mission for Next Session

  1. Choose a subject you care about
  2. Use each of the three templates to generate 5 assignment ideas with AI
  3. Prepare your 15-task basket for the upcoming Virtual Showcase of Creative Assignments
